My passion in life is gardening and specifically growing flowers from seed

May in my garden

This seems to have unintentionally become a monthly feature of my blog where I challenge myself to find something in flower in my garden that I haven’t posted about previously. At this time of year that is fairly easy as new things are growing and flowering weekly, in winter its a little more difficult.

I have today, planted out my sweetpeas sown from seed direct into the garden. I have only ever grown them in pots before so it will be interesting to see the difference. I have also surrounded them with slug killer (sorry to any slug lovers out there – you are welcome to mine any time you like)!

I have also fed my potted plants and dianthus for the first time this year. I am notoriously bad at feeding plants as much as I love gardening.

So here is my offering of whats in flower today in my garden.

Rode Hall Bluebell Walk

Today, we’ve been to Rode Hall in Stoke on Trent again to see the bluebells. It was a warm and sunny day today and so it was a lovely outing. The bluebells are so pretty as are the tulips (one of my favourite bulbs) and daffodils.

I hope you like my pictures mostly of bluebells but some of other pretty flowers too.

Thank you for reading my post, please feel free to comment, share with friends or even subscribe so you don’t miss future posts.

May sunshine

I start my blog once again with an apology, I had intended to write this post on bank holiday Monday but it was too cold and wet for any gardening so I did some decorating instead.

I have just come in from spreading used coffee grounds on the garden. It is good for the soil and I had hoped a deterrent to slugs and cats, however, I found a slug on the stuff and cats are still messing in that area. Oh well, it smells good and I can’t drink caffeine so it’s my fix! We get a bag a week from a local supermarket.

My seeds in the greenhouse are mostly coming on well with the exception of the cosmos who also didn’t fair too well in the propagator. I have sown some more this morning and not giving up just yet.

Today’s pictures are of 2 pots flowering in the greenhouse where they have been overwintering for months waiting for the last frost before they come out, maybe in the next few weeks. The first an alstroemeria that I got last year and the second gentian, a mini phlox and pelargonium not yet in flower.

It’s not raining!

As I write this blog I can actually say it’s been dry all day so far with hardly a cloud in the sky, which certainly hasn’t been the case much here recently.

This morning I was gardening for my one customer – a neighbour across the road who struggles to bend down. I was tidying up and planting summer bulbs. This afternoon I have been sowing seeds in the greenhouse and spreading used coffee grounds around the garden. They are supposed to be good for the soul and I’m hoping might keep the neighbouring cat from messing on the ground! Here’s hoping….

My tulip bulbs in pots are mostly doing really well. One pot has some that look like they’ve been eaten! But anyway some pictures to finish. If anyone can please identify the daffodils I would be very grateful as I love them but don’t seem to have kept the label and would like to buy some more.

April in my garden

So as I sit in the garage and wait for my car to have her MOT and hopefully pass I thought I’d write a little blog.

Sadly I’ve not done much in the garden this week due to the weather. Although yesterday was a nice sunny spring day. I bought 3 little tomato plants this week. A beefmaster, 1 plum and 1 gardeners delight. They are in the porch for now as I’ve got white fly in the greenhouse. My neighbour says to grow basil or French marigolds in there to attract the white fly, so I might try that.

My first pot of tulips planted last year has started to flower. There is a picture below, however, I have no idea what they are called as although I carefully labelled all 5 pots the labels have completely faded and I can’t read them. Best laid plans is nice and men hey!

Lastly to finish some pictures of things currently in flower in my garden. Hope the pictures do them justice

Happy Easter

Easter weekend is often a weekend filled with gardening here, however, not this year. I did a little weeding on Friday but certainly won’t be going outside today. Rain, thunder, lightning and it’s windy. Certainly not gardening weather!

However, we have quite a bit in flower at the moment including this camellia

So, if you read my recent blog about my seed sowing in the propagator, I can tell you that all 12 sweet peas came up and have hit the roof of the propagator now. Not sure I wanted that many but I sowed them assuming they wouldn’t all come up!

Seed sowing

It’s a dry day here in northwest England for a a change and having recently cleaned my pots and trays I decided to sow some seeds. The first of quite a few. I was given them both free with my gardeners world magazine and unlike my normal habit I’ve sown 2 per nodule in the hope I will get a good success rate. My friend has done very badly with free seeds from magazines so that is my reasoning for sowing more than normal.

It’s sweet peas and cosmos so far and both are now installed in their electric propagator.

Last years sweet peas while lovely and the scent amazing didn’t read the packet and therefore were much larger than expected and outgrew the support I gave them. I have been investigating better and taller support systems but yet to buy anything.

My next job is to transplant 2 of my dahlias to new pots as one has bust it’s pot and the other is not deep enough.

More posts and pictures soon.

Snow in March

So I thought Spring was on its way with the bulbs coming up and plants recovering from a not very cold winter (that’s not a complaint, I don’t like extremes of temperature, whether hot or cold) but today I wake up to snow. Fortunately it’s only on the garden where I live and not the paths or driveway.

A couple of pictures of the mixed seasons:

Rode Hall

Last week we had an afternoon outing to Rode Hall which is past Congleton. It’s basically an old house and lovely big garden. They were doing what they call the ‘snowdrop walk’ which I think finishes this Saturday. It was very pretty, we were a bit later in going so the hellebores (my favourite winter flower) was out too. It was a cold but dry day and I did enjoy it. I took a few pictures which are below but sadly my camera ran out of battery so not as many as I would have liked.

February in my garden

I keep starting my posts with an apology and here is another! It’s been too wet for any pictures until today so I am sorry about the lack of posts recently. It is, however, sunny today even if a bit cold but I’m so pleased to see the sun.

Things are growing and flowering in my garden, albeit a bit early in some cases. So here are some pictures of things currently in flower

Yesterday I also bought some mini iris which are awaiting planting.

That’s all for now. Thank for reading, any feedback is always welcome.
