My passion in life is gardening and specifically growing flowers from seed

Month: June, 2018

Late June update

Greetings from my very hot (30 degrees today) dry garden in South Manchester, where the skies are blue, the ground cracking with how dry it is and the water butts completely empty! We are watering with a hose pipe every other day but I’m so looking forward to rain soon. It’s been dry about 4 weeks now. I remember hot summers like this as a child where my normally brunette hair would go blonde! I know everyone says summer was hotter when they were younger but they really were at least til I was about 14!

I haven’t done much in the garden lately except weed – I’m not sure how they are still growing and tidy up! I have plans to dig over and improve some areas when the soil can be dug again!

I do, however, have lots in flower at the moment. It’s a good year for roses and even the new one I planted last year that looked so unhappy last autumn has a flower (see below). The sweetpeas are scrambling up the wigwams and smelling lovely.

So here’s a selection to of what’s flowering currently including the new delphinium I bought at Chatsworth flower show which is white as I’d hoped and patiently waiting to be planted. Maybe tonight!

June update

Greetings from a warm and dry garden in south Manchester. Contrary to popular believe it doesn’t always rain here, in fact we need the rain now as it’s been dry for nearly 10 days and despite all the water we collect in water butts we have nearly run out.

June is a month where there is something different to see every time you go outside. My sweet peas have just started flowering although they aren’t as tall as I expected nor even the colours I expected. My first lily is flowering today as well. I notice that some things are still a bit slow to grow and I’ve dug up a few things thinking they are dead only to see the green shoots are underground and had to replant them again. Some roses are flowering brilliantly, while others have no buds. The same for my poppies too.

Here are some pictures of what is currently flowering, including sweet William and white foxgloves that i grew from seed.

RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2018

Today my friend and I had a lovely day out at the RHS Chatsworth Flower show in Derbyshire, UK today. Fortunately, after visiting the first floral marquee we could find it stopped raining and was a good day for looking at gardens. This is the second year of this flower show and for me it was better this year, better organised and laid out and more organised. There were little flower displays outside most trade stands which were lovely. There was also a bio-dome type building that reminded me of the Eden Project in Cornwall. I loved the vast majority of the show gardens due to them being my favourite plant colours – white, pink and purple and a little red.

I only bought one plant – a white (hopefully) Delphinium – it was sold to me unnamed so we are unsure of the colour – but it should be a pale colour and will fit where I want to plant it whatever pale colour it turns out to be.

I’m not really good at reviewing shows so I will just present the pictures I have taken – I hope you like them and that they reflect the flower show.

Wordless Wednesday- more roses

First rose to flower

Just a quick picture of the first rose to flower this season. It’s been in the garden since my parents moved here approximately 45 years ago and we think it has its roots in the drain as it continues to do so well year after year! I wish you could smell it too, it’s beautiful
