Wordless Wednesday – Veronica

Echinacea

In my blog I tend to focus on the positives in my garden and what I have grown successfully, you would be excuses therefore for thinking everything I grow turns out well. However, you’d actually be wrong. I have been trying to grow echinacea, also known on coneflower for a number of years and have killed 11 or 12. They just don’t appear to want to grow a second year and when they do they don’t flower again. I have been successful with one, but the garden was built over and I moved the plant and yes it died. I’ve tried yellow, pink, orange, white, a two toned one, one in a pot (it got eaten before I planted it). You might think I should give up, but I love the plant and it goes well with my attempt at growing a cottage garden. So I have a new one (see below), I’ve done a little research, it likes a sunny position in nice soil and some space around it. I’ve put slug pellets down (please don’t shout if you like slugs, I don’t want my plants eating) and given it a support to grow up. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Wildflower seed experiment

For a while now I have really admired and wanted to grow a bed of wildflowers and by this I do not mean a garden left to its own devices and full of weeds and sometimes known as a wildflower garden. I mean actually sowing a wildflower mix. I have a large garden but have no empty beds that this could be done in so I’ve emptied a trough which had bulbs in, only 1 actually flowered (I’ve replanted it), sown my seeds and covered with gravel just to keep the seed in place. I wait to see what happens next. Pictures are, seed packet, before and after of the trough and if this doesn’t work I’ve basically most lost the cost of the seed packet £3 and some time and I’ll try something else in there next year.

Early April in my garden

I’m just dropping in today to show what’s currently flowering in my garden. It’s different every day at the moment and I love this season where everything is hopefully coming up after the winter rest. It’s mostly been a bit too cold for me to much gardening lately but today I managed a stint. I planted a new delphinium King Arthur which is bright purple I think and a bright pink geranium but not together. I also sowed some seeds in the greenhouse and am attempting to grow roses from cuttings I’d cut flowers that I gave mum for Mother’s Day. Might not work but I’m having a go anyway. I’ve noticed that we’ve had little rain (no complaints – we’ve had a very wet winter) here for a few days so I’ve had to start watering the new plants and containers. So here’s my pictures of what’s currently flowering in the back garden.

Fritillary flowers
Lonely little tulip in the garden, I’m not not sure the variety but every year I buy new tulips for pots and the ones that haven’t performed well get planted in the garden so I think this is one of those!
New scabious planted out last week

Magnolia just started flowering this week
Lonely little hyacinth in the front garden
Pretty pansies waiting for the tulips in the pot to flower. Looks like someone has been eating them though…

Some pictures from my garden – March 2020

I’m so glad of my garden right now and the enjoyment I get from it. I don’t want to think to read any more about this virus right now so am posting some pictures from my garden. As long as you want to see them I will likely be doing more of this as I’m home more. I apologise they aren’t great quality. One of my plans for this year is to learn how to better photos but I guess it might be a while off yet

Wordless Wednesday- more camellias

Camellia Debbie – flowering

I planted this in the ground last year after having it in a pot since 2016 and then overwintering in the greenhouse each year. So this year is the first time it’s Peres since it’s new position and it’s so pretty. I originally bought it for a garden I was doing at one of my rental properties but couldn’t bring myself to part with it.
